Regression and its Representations in Mark Rothko's Drawings

Abstract

        This research is concerned with the study of (regression and its representations in the drawings of Mark Rethko) and is located in four chapters, the first of which is devoted to the problem of research and its importance and need and its goal, which was limited to identify recidivism and representations in the drawings of Marc Rethko, within a period of time between (1940-1950) The second chapter dealt with the regression in European art Modern, and the second chapter dealt with the indicators of the theoretical framework and previous studies, which included the most important contents of the framework. The theoretical indicators and concepts have either The research procedures have started from the collection of the works of the artist Marc Rathko, which show the representations of the regression and ending with what was analyzed as a sample assigned to it Chapter III, which resulted in the results and conclusions that answered the objective of the research presented with the recommendations in chapter IV of the research and summarized as follows,



  1. The primitive regression towards primitive and magical worlds and the reversion to historical symbols and myths was apparent to the artist Rethko through the use of ancient and primitive symbols and different methods and constructive treatments that took various forms to express his escape to nature and spontaneity and return to the past and spontaneity in the expression of its internal components and reduce the state of tension and anxiety Which he lives for a sense of security and psychological balance and this confirms the collective subconscious at Young.

  2. Childhood regression has created a state of spontaneity, transparency, free play, randomness, absurdity, rejection of reality, anarchism and tendency towards distortion of the artist Rathko reflected in one way or another on his artistic and modern techniques in form and content, indicating the importance of the early stages of childhood in the personality of the individual and this is confirmed by the theory of analysis Psychological.

  3. the emergence of recidivism towards the memories of war and tragedies brought in addition to the devastation caused at the physical, psychological and social level, which was reflected on the constructive treatments of the artist and according to the artist's psychology and raw materials and tools and technology available to express those tragedies.


Based on the findings of the researcher we find a set of conclusions are as follows,



  1. Recession is an effective defensive mechanism that occurs to all individuals in general and the artist in particular, aiming to achieve a balance against the pressures of reality, whether subjective, social or political.

  2. the work of creative imagination resulting from the artist's attempt to escape from reality and the formation of an imagined reality resulting in self-understanding.

  3. There are unconscious motives for the artist to find a way to express what goes on in his mind.
