The Hexagonal Star on the Arabizing Umayyad Coins in Well-Known Mints

Abstract

The main aim of this research paper is to document the inscription of hexagon star on the coins used in Umayyad period after the Arabizing the coins, which was follis made from copper , in mints of of Bilad Al- Sham (Levant), Africa, Al-Andalus and Iran. Some of these mints continue struck hexagon on their coins since the period before arabizing coins, like Damascus, Hums and Jarash.

 This research emphasize that Muslims was among the most civilizations interested about engraving hexagon star on their coins, regardless any ideological explanations and beyond interpretations that some try to project on that ornamentation element, But it was Just a symbol for mint or for a team of a mint.

This study was based on descriptive, documentary, statistical and historical analysis of Umayyad coins with hexagon star, mentioned in references, web sites, and Ashmolean Museum in Britain.
