The Aesthetic Features of the Raku Technique in Contemporary Kurdish Ceramics: Mariwan Jalal as an Example

Abstract

Ceramic art is one of the arts whose techniques are varied to serve the artistic form and for the benefit of the intellectual content. The technique is not fixed, but rather variable, as it is developing significantly in the modern era, as a result of several factors, including the cultural and intellectual openness of the Internet era, the development of mechanization and machines, and the raku technique is one of the most important techniques in the world of ceramics. It has its own history and artistic methods that deserve study. The research titled “The aesthetic features of the raku technique in contemporary Kurdish ceramics (Mariwan Jalal) as a model” seeks to establish knowledge stations that constitute a qualitative addition to aesthetic studies, and a precise analysis of the experience of one of the pioneers of Kurdish ceramic art, which was influenced by most of the neighboring and subsequent experiences. The importance of the research and its goal was represented in (identifying the aesthetic features of the raku technique in contemporary Kurdish ceramics). The structure of the theoretical framework included three topics: The first: The impact of technology on the aesthetic manifestation of ceramic art. Second: The history, origins and types of the Raku technique, and third: The aesthetic impact of the Raku technique on contemporary Kurdish ceramics. Followed by: Analysis of the research sample according to the descriptive analytical method. Three works were intentionally chosen to represent the aesthetic features of the raku technique. The most prominent results of the research are: The raku technique was able to achieve the artist’s goal of clarifying the meaning of the artistic form, as the technique embodies the form to clarify the expressive meaning of the artistic work. The potter (Mariwan Jalal) was able, with his experience, to control beauty centers. The raku technique has modern importance, and although this technique has a long history, it was able to extract from it the utilitarian function to transform it into an aesthetic function that keeps pace with current modernity. It carries within it a unique historical and aesthetic philosophy. As for the most prominent recommendations: It is possible to establish workshops within government institutions for ceramics, pertaining to raku, to teach students this important and beautiful technique in the art of ceramics to raise the scientific and artistic level.
